Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding potential actions by President Obama on immigration. I appreciate hearing from Hoosiers on this important topic.
I will oppose and seek to overturn any efforts by President Obama to provide amnesty for illegal aliens through executive action. I have repeatedly stated that the Constitution prohibits the President from acting unilaterally in this area, and Congress must first consider any changes to existing immigration law. Furthermore, I believe that b efore pursuing immigration reform we must first address the very real concern s about the security of our borders .
Recent threats have increased the need to strengthen and secure our borders . Over the past year we have seen a humanitarian crisis develop , with thousands of unaccompanied alien children arriving at the border under a false pretext that they will be permitted legal status or citizenship. We must deliver a clear and concise message that those traveling to our border will not be guarantee d a pathway to citizenship. Additionally ,threats from organizations such as the Islamic State, or ISIS, make it paramount we know exactly who is entering our country and do not have a porous border.
The Administration's open border policies and refusal to enforce our nation's immigration laws have led us to the current situation and must be countered immediately. Amnesty through executive action will only worsen the situation and potentially endanger legitimate immigration reform proposals. The President must work with Congress on these issues. I will be sure to keep your views in mind as the Senate considers the topic of immigration.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me, and please do not hesitate to keep in touch on matters of concern to you.
