The U.S. Army is moving forward to replace the Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol with a more powerful handgun that also meets the needs of the other services.
As the lead agent for small arms, the Army will hold an industry day July 29 to talk to gun makers about the joint, Modular Handgun System or MHS.
The MHS would replace the Army's inventory of more than 200,000 outdated M9 pistols and several thousand M11 9mm pistols with one that has greater accuracy, lethality, reliability and durability, according to Daryl Easlick, a project officer with the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia.
"It's a total system replacement -- new gun, new ammo, new holster, everything," Easlick said.
They'll probably spend millions and millions and come up with the 1911 Colt in 45 ACP

It worked well for us, and the boys in WW2! There's a reason why SEALS use Sig .45s. I would be willing to BET that We, the people. Won't get a chance at any of the M9s. Our govt will give them to some despot

I am sure they will suck up to NATO and give the contract to another 9mm weapon. They should've stayed with the 45 and update the gun if they "needed" to make any changes. Nothing wrong with the 45 caliber nor with the 1911. With the new technology I am sure they could set up those laser/CNC machines or whatever they are called and mass produce a "better" 1911. No better gun around... none better looking either

they would never go back to the 1911 design. In todays society its not "safe" enough, requires additional training for the average city boy that joined the army and never fired a gun. It does not have capacity, its SA only, and I cant believe they will get away from the 9 mm either. todays modern soldier trend is smaller bullets, and more of them. I would be willing to bet they will go with a polymer, hi cap 9mm, think glock, or springfield xd.
yeah, 9mm will go away. they will end up with a .40 that is reduced recoil. Probably will be "new ambidextrous" with a second set of sights on the side for street thugs
Jeff Cooper, a great american and my boyhood idol -as Lewis Grizzard (RIP) used to write-, once said: "the development of the double action 9mm pistol was a solution to a problem that never existed". He was of the opinion that there was nothing better than the 1911 and he preached the "****ed and locked" carry. My humble opinion is that there is nothing "prettier" out there than the 1911 and if I don't like the girl she ain't walking by my side...

I agree with you 100% Jose, just don't think the military, or public at large will. I have around 10 1911]s or 1011 style pistols, and to me you just cant beat 'em. never got on the .40 bandwagon. I like keeping two basic pistol calibers , .45 and 9 mm, less calibers to hoard ! LOL. Things I have read about the .40 is the pressures and recoil it exerts really beat up the gun, and they wear out quickly. Besides, how could it do the job any better than a big ol fat .45 ? Time will tell.
Going back to the 1911A1 will never happen. It was the "perfect service pistol" and was so described by many experts of the time. However, to go back to it would be admitting a mistake. Hence it will not happen.
