When the last bullet-producing lead smelter closes its doors on Dec. 31, it will mark a major victory for those who say lead-based ammunition pollutes the environment, but others warn 'green' bullets will cost more, drive up copper prices and do little to help conservation.
The bid to ban lead bullets, seen by some as harmful to the environment, started slowly more than a decade ago. But with two dozen states, including California, banning bullets made of the soft, heavy metal, the lead bullet's epitaph was already being written when the federal government finished it off.
First, the military announced plans to phase out lead bullets by 2018.
"Whatever the EPA's motivation when creating the new lead air quality standard, increasingly restrictive regulation of lead is likely to affect the production and cost of traditional ammunition."
- National Rifle Association
Then the federal Environmental Protection Agency, citing emissions, ordered the shutdown of the Doe Run company's lead smelter in Herculaneum, Mo., by year's end.
Whether by state or federal regulation, or by market forces, lead bullets will be all but phased out within a few years in favor of so-called green bullets, experts say. While many believe that this will help the environment by keeping lead from contaminating groundwater, others say switching to copper-based bullets will cost hunters and sportsmen more and have little effect on the environment.
Not known yet. My guess is like all Government bull**** they will just smelt the lead in India or Pakistan and send it back here for bullet production. Scrap lead is still being bought and sold and always will since it a commodity and has lots of uses outside shooting (batteries, solder, battery cable ends, fuses, etc etc. All we can really hope for is to survive the next few years until this POS Government changes.BTW, if anyone in the club has lead and no uses for it, see me. Hard lead and soft, I can use both.

Maybe we can get a "carve out". Seems quite popular with this Administration. Who knows what will happen. If lead is outlawed completely, it will doom trap shooting, skeet, sporting clays,Cowboy Action, muzzleloading, all of it. You could not afford to shoot a 60 bird match using Bismuth or it's equivalent. Our old guns won't shoot copper bullets so the NMLRA would just die. I think a friendlier Washington in the future would help a lot, but then again, I'm still staying with my earlier view that the whole mess cannot be fixed and eventually the whole damn thing will fail and collapse, and the we'll just have to see what arises from the ashes. I have faith in the American people, I DO NOT have faith in it's Government.

I loaded up many years ago. I bought several boxes of .44, .45 and rifle bullets (mostly .270), about a dozen cans of powder, several bricks of 22LR and 500 AK rounds. Shortly after, the local range closed down and I stopped reloading and shooting as much. So, I have raw material to last me a while.
Boys, if you hate the way things are going, you can't hate it more than I do. I grew up under a totalitarian government. We had to get a permit to own a BB gun!
If you think it only happens in Banana Republics... Think again! Last time I checked they don't grow bananas in Europe!
Sad state of affairs...
God bless, José
I wish more people would listen to folks like Jose. We've grown soft, fat and flatulent and have no idea just how bad it CAN be.

I was hoarding, before hoarding was cool. I've got plenty, but as one of my buddies says "I like plenty and a half". I probably have 10,000 rounds total of all different calibers,9mm,.45acp, 9mm makarov, 7.62x39, .308, 30-06, 303 british,.223,.22, 7.62x54, .357, .38, 6.5x55,12 gauge,20 ga, .410, maybe more. i need to count it one day.
i figure even if you dont need it, ammo and guns will make the best trade items if it ever gets really bad, and they are decent trade items anytime, plus the shelf life is indefinite. A much better place to put extra money than gold or silver.
