That pillow ticking makes good char, I always used old blue jean material, works great. I have old film tins for making it in bulk.

Dang Johnny, I'd want the dog to leave a little bit for me.

Go to walgreens  and go to the womens war paint section. Right next to the cotton balls they got pure cotton pads, CHEAP!!!!

You aint gotta cut up your dang pillows.

Char cloth was used by the old free trapper to catch a spark from his flint and steel. Sort of a Kentucky Zippo

Boys, everybody needs to know how to make char, and we should all have fire makins' with us in the woods. Get a ball of twine. cutoff 6" pieces and unravel them. stuff in an airtight tin box with a TINY hole drilled in it. heat that over a flame. You will see smoke pouring out the little hole. when the smoke stops, take it out of the flame. the black stuff inside the box is char. If you did it right, the smallest spark will catch and smoulder. You then put that in your tinder and blow on it to make fire.
Tinder? can be anything. Lint from the clothes dryer is excellent. You should carry some cotton balls covered in Vaseline to ignite with the tinder. They burn long and hot.
All this was pre-bic
