Tim, you have outdone yourself! That is a museum piece. Pure art work. A heirloom piece.
My congratulations to the young man.
God bless, José

I started gathering the parts for this about the time he was born. Thought I had better get it done in case something happened to me.. I built him some other "kid" sized guns , all right handed, but after they were done I discovered he was left eye dominant. I should have known I guess, his Mother , Grandmother, Great and Great Great Grandmothers, sister, all left handed. The inscription on the patchbox reads "When This You See, Remember Me ", borrowed from a poem.

When he gets big enough to shoot it, he will have his Great Uncle Mike's .54 caliber flintlock rifle. I was able to track it down and buy it back from the then owner (Mike had traded it off several years ago) before Mike passed away. Mike was not left handed but lost his right eye in an accident when he was 8 years old.

No one in either sides of my family are or were hunters. My Grandfather Smith ( the only one I ever knew) owned an old bolt action .410 shotgun , likely a Mossberg , and some time after he died I approached my Grandmother about his gun. She had just sold it to some guy who repaired her roof for $50. I have lamented that for years. This boy will have something of mine for sure.

Would you be willing to adopt a 50 year old grandson? The plus side is, i'm out of diapers, so you would never be bothered with that messy chore (Allthough I could be close to the time when I revert back to them, at least my wife thinks so).
Great gift Grampa, and something I'm sure he will cherish and pass on to his.

I have decided to give him a knife for Christmas. I will wrap it and get it up there this week. We may as well spoil the boy.......I never knew my Grandfather. Pretty sure he was white.

There have been a couple show up at the club the past few years. I bought one of them, but sold it.
