For fur on tanning- two gallons of water, two pounds of salt (table salt is best-it's cleaner) and 8 ozs of new battery acid (electrolyte). Submerge pelt or deer hide that has been fleshed well in this and put rock on top to keep it under the solution. Stir every day and return rock. I find a week good for most including deer. If in doubt make a small slit in some out of the way place on the pelt and see if the "color" goes all the way thru. When done (don't leave it in too long , say a month or the hair will slip) take out and wash with clear running water till the solution is out of it. Stretch and let dry on a pc of plywood or such. That's it. If you want to soften it for a hat or something you can "break" the hide by working it with your hands. Don't put in dryer with tennis shoes. The wife will kill you and the hide will be ruined.
I have done deer , coyotes, coon , possum and rabbits and squirrels this way. Works great. I have a coyote hat that is near 20 yrs old and still in good shape.
