RE: I MUST BE OFF!

John, you need to post pictures. Jim says you'll be back before the blanket shoot and I said you won't. If you don't have pics I can't prove you're still gone!confuse

some New mexico views. I have some stories already: IE- camped south of roswell in bottomless lake state park. during the night, a colony of moths moved into the liner of my helmet....and came out while I was riding for over an hour
They were as big as your little finger, and crawled down the inside of  my visor.

Santa Fe: all the old hippies, leftover branch davidians, and the next group waiting to ride a comet tail are all in santa fe

Roswell is a big town of 50,000 people. who knew?

The Indians seem to be doing ok, but the really rural mexicans are living in abject poverty. Some of the older ones speak no english.

I rode 80 miles to look at the puyte cliff dwelling, and the navajos wouldn't let me ride the last 15 miles to it--no motorcycles allowed. Seems the loud pipes disturb the old ones---damn harleys.furious So a futile 80 mile backtrackconfuse

I rode 180 miles today across the Navajo nation with NO gas stations. Folks walking, miles from anything

Glad you are having a big time but I'll be glad when you get back home. I have no one to play with other than Cowles and we both know how far the intellectual discussion goes with him. I've been shooting one of the recurves a lot and have arrows tuned up. I think I'll open a can of whoop ass on him tomorrow.

John, good to hear you are having the time of your life.

When I visited Santa Fe few years back I had the same impression as you about all the hippies, etc. You forgot to mention that none of them, including women, ever took a bath... and they smell like it!  bleh

What route did you take through the Navajo nation. I have worked there several times: Fort Defiance and Chinle.

Stay healthy and be safe.

God bless,

José

Boys, this last week, I have ridden through some BEAUTIFUL country. Camped on Federal land for $2.50 per night. They furnished water....which you need here, since it's so dry.

Jose' I can't remember the route, but it was from Cuba to Quemoto

Tim, I recon a couple weeks yet. Still don't know where I'll stay when I get back. Is there camping in HNF?

The cliff dwellings are as neat a thing as I've seen.....enjoy the pictures

Jonathan, I'm thinkin' under a bridge in an old van

Tim, I've kind of formed a plan---subject to revision--North through AZ to the 4 corners monument, then East across Colorado (already seen the tall parts when hunting elk) East either across KS or OK, and then cruise around AR some. I think Arkansas may be a "hidden gem". When I get done there, it's Eastern  TN, then back amoungst y'all

Thanks for taking us along John... love that part of the country...

Yes there is camping in the Hoosier National Forest... there are several established campgrounds... not sure on the length of time allowed... I think the state parks are 2 weeks and have to move to another location...

John, if you are going to the 4 corners through AZ try to go up on 89N out of Flagstaff and then 160 to the 4 corners. That route will take you through Monument Valley, of John Wayne fame.  Pretty drive. Enjoy!

These pictures are from that area.

Be safe. Stay healthy.

God bless,

José

Jose' I rode 189/160 the whole way through AZ. Saw the Navajo nation from Chinle North. Hit the Petrified forrest, 4 corners Monument, and the old Pueblo ruins.
I'm in Colorado right now, but it threatens snow, and is right nippy, so I've decided to head back East and South tomorrow. Plan to loiter some in Arkansas.

Todd, does Jim come over and look at the pictures on your 'puter?

The painted desert is beautiful...too bad it was cloudy, because it really glows
in sunlight!

Nice pictures.

I worked a few weeks in Chinle last year. We had a couple of wind/dust storms: red dust all over. It gets into everything!

While you are loitering in AR maybe you can find some hogs. AR is not that far to drive.

Be safe. Stay healthy.

God bless,

José

Welcome from Arkansas.
Some observations from the road:
Navajo women are VERY friendly! A lot, often, and everywhere I went on the Res! 8^)
Oklahoma roads are awful. All Potholes and trucks.
People everywhere have a motorcycle story. Complete strangers come up and start talking
about back when they did some ride. Very enjoyable.

The best thing about Navajo women is that they own it all. Men have nothing! When they divorce the man walks away empty handed...   confuse  evileye

I believe they are one of the best looking, if not the best, of all the tribes. Very handsome.

The older generation still clings to the old traditions. Most do not speak English. They still use their Medicine Man for healing rituals. Next to the hospitals there is a hogan, the traditional Navajo dwelling, for the purpose of performing the healing ceremonies that can only take place in their dwellings. If a patient wants his Medicine Man to tend to him/her all they have to do is walk out of the hospital and into the hogan.

Very little archery is practiced in the Res. though. They hunt with guns because they do it for subsistence: they can not afford to come home with no meat.

After trying to exterminate them with bullets now we are doing it with drugs/alcohol and diet. Obesity and its daughters: hypertension/diabetes, etc. are very common.

God bless,

José
