My weekend at a Hunter Ed course

I took Jackson and his sister to a Hunter Ed course over the weekend. Everything was great, except maybe the Bowhunting part of it. Now to clarify, the guy doing that part is a really nice guy, I have known him and his wife for a long time. But what I had a problem with was when he showed the 3 types of bows as per the course handbook. For a "longbow" he held up an old Ben Pearson solid glass Jet bow. (actually they are recurves) He said he could not string the bow since it was broke and sure enough it was. OK, on to recurves. This example was an old Shakespeare that had one limb so twisted that you could not brace it. Both bows were dirty and basically junk. When he got to compounds he opened a hard case and drug out a Matthews with every bell and whistle you could imagine, and told us it was a $1000 bow. The kids "ooohed and aahed ?. He asked if anyone shot recurves ? I held my hand up (so did Jackson), he then asked about longbows. Again we held up our hands. He looked at us like we were from Mars.

Just to let you know how sometimes our side of the sport gets portrayed. I have volunteered to help out with future muzzleloading and archery parts of the Hunter Ed course.

He says he did. Made four of them, two working and two prebent props. Cool. And I believe they are hedge. BTW, the archery instructor told the kids that if you are using an armguard , there is something wrong with your technique. I asked to help out sometime and they told me I had to be certified. All that means is I have to have scored a 92 or better on the test. I scored a 98 but that was a while ago and there is no way to prove it. If I had known that I would have taken the test again.
