I have made a 70 amo red oak longbow backed with bamboo i hope this one stays together i made a tillering tree but need to do some things to it before i get to far, so far i have not put a string on at brace heighth yet just a loose string so i can see the limbs ill tell you the truth im scared to death that im going to mess this up but im going slow, it took it to about 10" and have tiller equal limbs at this point.

Bamboo looks nice and thin. Take it slow. It looks good so far.

Ok, on this bow when removing wood from the belly should i remove from the sides of the belly, or edge , or right on the belly?? I was afraid of removing to much of the thickness or what do you all think confuse

I would leave the belly flat on this one. I think that is supposed to be a little safer. Before you bend it much though round the corners of the belly pretty good. You should also round the edges on the back slightly. Don't really round the edges on the back, just break the sharp edge.

What kind of Boo is on it? Is ground flooring? I don't see any nodes.

How are you removing wood at this point?

I have stopped removing wood at this point, looking to get a rasp or something like that. Have used big belt sander like a floor model, up to this point but thats what got me in trouble last timeno so stopping here until i get something else. I did slightly round the back corners down, and will work on taking from the belly corners alittle more. The back is the bamboo flooring that i had, riped off a piece about an 1/8"and glued it on the red oak at the start of the bow. The thing is that the bamboo has alot of splinters and im afraid of possibly pop ups on the bamboo grain may have to back it with something if it works out.

I don't think bamboo flooring will work for a back. Plain bamboo has no violations of it's back and even it explodes now and then.Thin piece of hickory would be better.

I think Tim is right about the boo floring. If you have some left over try bending just it and see if it raises splinters. I would find a thin strip of hickory and back it with that before you go much farther. 

A cabinet scraper is what you want to tiller with.

Thats what i was wondering,the flooring doesn't just bust or crack but it tares apart. I took a piece over my knee and finally broke it but really put it to the test i think that it would hold up but it is the little tiny splinters that it puts off, kinda like fiberglass. Looking for a scraper today so not sure on the backing if i have to back the boo with something it would be hare because of the rounded edges that is there now, not to minchen the handel area would be nice to use a rawhide ,paper,or sinue backin of so sort. I'll see thanks for now biggrin

i made a redoak bamboo and gave it to my son , only pulled 48-50# but shot ok .
i have some more bamboo if your interested in a piece ?
but i would go with a nonbacked osage or hickory bow .




not sure who the guy is pulling it back in the last pic.....lol

Sweet looking bow !! I may be interested in the bamboo  thanks what is the proper brace height on a 70" bow like mine?

i only brace my selfbows about 6" just enough so that the feathers clear .
your bow might need more? idk

got the bow done need a string but , other than that its ready i put drywall fiberglass tape on the thin  bamboo and camo on that so thank for all the advise smile

Thanks I'm pretty happy about the way it turned out, its really an addiction i'm ready to get started again !! Working on a rest and grip for it tonight, got a string coming from 3rivers wish i had someone in the club that made strings, would give them my money instead of the big company !

Guy, half the people in the club make their own strings. Buy the stuff, and we'll show you how to make your own.

RON NIXE makes strings,pretty much any color,length,thickness you would want.I will tell him you are needing some strings made tomarrow.He may bring his string jig  to saturdays shoot.

making a flemish string is easier than making the bow . and if you making bows you'll want to learn to make strings
