SUN ,what sun, we never saw any sun today at harrison co. RON,RON and myself had more blistery fun today shooting yet another 3d course in the snow, really wasnt bad at all shooting and walking, never got cold.Course was set pretty good with a few challenging shots and distance shots.Bob said they had 45 shooters today which is more than they expected. The chili and waffles went fast, along with several pots of coffee, had a great time.
Dennis, can't tell from the pics, is that the litle folding stove you made? What do you use for fuel, sticks? I love these little hobo stoves. I like to cook with my swedish mess kit trangia alchohol stove. I bought it from sportsmanguide years ago for about $4, now you find 'em on Ebay for $80 ! Wished I had bought a hundred. i've been researching and you-tubeing a bunch on homemade "Hobo" stoves. Its alot of fun.
Randy, this little stove is the final modification to the ones I "ve been playing with. The first ones I made were smaller. They burned small sticks and would heat a couple pints of water. They were not very effecient. You had to constantly feed small sticks in. They burned too fast to really get anything bigger going. They were about 2.5 " across and maybe four inches tall. A bean or soup can would set on top of them and that's about all they were good for heating up.
On this new one you could fry chicken It's a lot bigger and can take much larger chunks of wood. Once you get a fire going you can throw in peices the size of your wrist that are about five inches long. You can put several of these peices in and in a few minutes you have a nice bed of coals to cook on. I have a small grate that fits on top that can handel a porkchop sized peice of meat. I've cooked hamburgers, steak, shrimp and peices of salmon on it. Actually I,ve cooked a bunch of stuff on it just experimenting. It's more of a personal size grill though, for one person.
I do have a little Lodge two quart dutch oven that fits perfectly on top. You can feed the stove slowly and it will cook almost like a crock pot. I've had pots of beans, stew, soup etc. that I've cooked half the day on it. That only requires that you throw a chunk of wood on about every 30 minutes or so.
It will handel brickets or bulk charcoal either one but I prefer good dry hard wood. Gotta GO DEN
Ok, I'm back. One other thing it does is, my charcoal chimney that I use for my grill will set right on top of the stove. Your supposed to use newspaper to get the thing lit. That takes a long time. I start a fire in my stove, fill the chimney and set it on. My coals are ready real quick. Then while I'm grilling on the big grill, I can cook a side dish on my little stove.
One of my favorite things to do is go out in the mornings and fire it up. I have a walmart grease can, the one in the picture, that I make boiled coffee in. I start with cold water and dump the grounds right in. After it boils a few, I put a shot of cold water in and pour carefully in a cup. That's a good way to start the day. Then I load her up with more wood and let it burn down while I drink my coffee.
I have a small Lodge cast iron fry pan that I get out. I get that Purnell " Old Folks" all pork bologna and fry me up a slice. Then I fry up an egg. Put it on real soft Rainbo bread with a slice of cheese. There ain't no one in no resturant eatin so good.
If the evening is gonna be cool and the skeeters aint so bad I go out and start a fire. Me and that little girl dog of mine will set in the swing and watch the sun go down. There's always something to see. I cut and split a pile of good wood and you only have to throw a couple pieces on every few minutes. I can have a nice evening fire and only use two or three firewood size pieces of wood. I've probably done that a hundred times
This swedish alchohol stove I have will cook anything with a few ounces of denatured alchohol. I fried bacon and cooked two eggs for breakfast at 10,500 feet altitude up in the Rockies in '08, use a GI mess kit on top of it. Of course you could use sticks, pinecones, stern, or fuel bars as well, but the alchohol is very efficient. Go to youtube and search popcan stoves, it shows how to make a similar burner from 2 aluminum cans . it would work great with you're stove as a fuel source. I have a dozen of the swedish trianga burners if you want to try one.
HeeHe Randy I've made several alcky stoves also. They will work in this little stove. My best one will burn for about 15 minutes on a couple ounces. The ones that work best are chaffing dish alcky cans that they sell at Sams Club. They burn good for a few hours. I've used them to make coffee with my percolator several times in that little stove.
It comes apart in seconds and stacks up about 6" X 7" X 1" or so. All stainless. They turn blue with use though.
I do not seek the good of others as a sanction for my right to exist, nor do I recognize the good of others as a justification for their seizure of my property or their destruction of my life.- Hank Rearden
wouldn't it be more efficient to drink the alcohol and then smoke?
Seriously, I bought one of those old German alcohol mess kits from Cheaper-than-dirt sever years ago. I use the Heet from X-mart in it. Works very well and my only objection is the weight.
Yep you missed a good one Dale,we figured you either couldnt get out or it was to cold for ya.SPLASH had a wet time right off the bat but recovered and shot pretty well considering.STEVE struggled a bit as did CHRIS and BILL but STEVE said it was NIXES fault. All i can say is NIXE didnt say[ one ]word while Steve was shooting.IT WAS MORE LIKE 50.
I told Cowles about the plunge, and he was disappointed that nobody had a camera. He plans to ask JR to do a belly flop off the bridge at the next shoot, so he can film it.
