John, get together with 2 other guys and just go to any public land in CO. It cost me about $1,000. You could hunt for 2 weeks as cheap as a day. That cost includes tags,you're share of the gas, and you're food if you don't get extravagent. You may spend some $$$ a head of time on items like water purifiers,backpack,lite tents, and sleeping bags, but hey, thats an investment that you keep and reuse. Just plan on hiking waaaay back in away from the roads or the hunting is bad at best. About 4 miles in on foot got us into elk, where the country we parked our truck in was devoid of elk. They won't hang around any human pressure, not when all that remote wildernesss is at their disposal. Get in shape ahead of time, and don't push you're self when you get there. Drink at least 1 gal of H2O per day. Spend a day hiking in, cause you're first day or 2 are the worst, and you need to acclimate to the altitude. Push you're self too hard and you end the hunt soon. I blew out my knee on the 3 rd day last year, and it still ain't right, probably never will be, but i'd still like to go back. Laying in a backpackers tent on lumpy cold ground, 4 miles hump from the road, listening to the elk bugle all night under the most brilliant star lit sky you will ever see makes it worth it all.
