Does anyone have any interest in a club archery only rabbit hunt over dogs? I'm thinking of doing it at the Peabody WMA in Beaverdam Ky, where there are oodles of rabbits on a good day. It would be an all day hunt to make it worthwhile, and Bill Humphrey and I have 4 running dogs that should produce us a few rabbits to shoot at. I think out of state resdients can purchase a 3 day license still and you have to purchase a Peabody WMA permit which costs residents 15 dollars( unsure of non residents) but maybe it won't be too cost prohibitive to do, and would sure be a great time. Let's hear it, anyone interested? Bryan

Peabody is near a little town on the western ky parkway, it is reclaimed stripmine land. They sow it in cerece lespedeza, which is heaven for rabbit and quail, deer and turkey love it too. At one time in was the best spot in Ky to hunt rabbits, and probably still is. You should see some action.
there are several places in indiana to hunt rabbits, milkman ,sputter and myself all have dogs theres run well and all mine want to do is pee everywhere, but there only 8 wks old....im down for a good ol rabbit hunt...we did one last year the same time as the atterbury hunt ran 6 rabbits, missed 6,but didnt loose any arrows....
I'll get with Bill and firm up a date, and will post it here within a couple of days. Sounds like a great time will be had! And yes, there are plenty of rabbits down there. Shot opportunities have to be worked for as the cereses is very thick, so you have to look for openings where you think the dogs will go with the rabbit and wait him out. The rabbits there seem to be pretty smart, and are easily turned if they see you move. I had one running right at me last year, probably 60-70 yards away, and I thought Steve Redden was standing beside me, so I said quietly, "here comes the rabbit". The rabbit apparently heard me, turned and ran right back on the same track he came in on and made our dogs look like dummies! We have seen some rabbits run the dogs nearly 1/2 mile straight line before circling, so the dogs definately get a work out. The town closest to where we generally hunt is Beaver Dam, I'm sure you can google it to find it. There is a good restaraunt to meet at for breakfast, then head over to the WMA for a good day of hunting. The terrain is somewhat challenging, but we can probably get in a valley big enough to hunt all day long, and run several rabbits. Sounds like a hunt coming together! Bryan

I was looking on the Ky. regulation site and it says you can get a one day non-res. small game for $10. The permit for Peabody is $15. This sounds good to me. I did notice that the folks in charge at Peabody want you to get a free permit for anything organized that involves ten or more people. They want 30 days notice. Bryan can look into this. They have a long season for rabbit. DEN
Bryan, you mentioned this was along the WKP, or near it. Is this down near the Green River ? I'm just trying to work out the logistics of it. Even from L/ville, we're talking what, a 2 to 2 and half hour drive ?

Beaver Dam is right off the Western Ky Parkway, it's about 1 1/2 hours from Shepherdsville, Ky, so it it probably 2 hours from the Kennedy Bridge. There may be a quicker way to go, say cross the river at Owensboro and come in from that direction. I talked with Bill yesterday, it's a go, we should have a date set this week, and I'll post it here. By the way, this part of Peabody is in Ohio County I think, and the original song Paradise is by John Prine, and here is the link to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHHR_tA7eg4&feature=PlayList&p=FD5B288E9EA05F22&index=0 Thanks, Bryan

The song is about that area, Peabody is in Ohio,Union, and Muhlenburg counties. One of the power plants is Green River (KU), the other is Paradise (TVA) Thanks for the Youtube link!
John, its kinda like that in the bluegrass region, an hour and a half to any public land from my house. Western KY is loaded with public land, also good hunting in northern Ky.
John, we just did not have the good luck or bad luck,( however you think of it ) to have a lot of coal under us.Go down in Southwestern Indiana, where the coal used to be and you'll find hunting areas (and fishing). My exwife's family came from Eastern KY (Manchester) and the hunting down there used to be just awful. Don't know if that's changed, other than the elk.
