Randy, me and Ronald went up the first year and just hung around. Ron's arm was in a sling, and I took my tracking dogs in case someone needed them. It's a beautiful place and you can walk any direction from the campground and start hunting after so many yards. Lot's of big hills and hollers. I'm trying to talk Ronald into going again. Jim lives up that way and he said two 180class bucks came out of there last year. John French was there the year me and Ron went and that one afternoon went to his hunting spot nearby and killed a bigun. Look up Jackson-Washington state forest. It's right near Brownstown. Not brown county. I think it's about 20 miles farther up I 65 from Scottsburg. They have a huge big shelter house built by the CCC back during the depression that everyone camps around. There shouldn't be hardly anyone camping in there that time of year. If you go don't bring firewood. They supply that. Pay attention when they start working on selfbows, as that might start you in the right direction down the path of natural archery
Still debatin' on it Dennis, i am scheduled to work that weekend, so i'd have to use 36 hours of precious vacation time, plus buy out of state tags. I can hunt alot cheaper here near home. But..., i'd def love to hunt south IN, and meet some new fellers, and all them trackers and toters could come in handy if a fellow gets lucky. Believe it or not i've been primitive for several years, just not 100 %. Hunted with selfbow and cedar a few years back all season, first year in many I struck out. Most years after killing one here at home I dust off the hedge and cedar and try for a doe, not pullled it off yet, last year made a bad hit on a doe, never found her. That bothers me, buut i'll keep trying. I like deer meat, so its recurves and carbons, not yet had to resort to gunpowder though. Let me know if you guys are going, I may try and make it.
Talk Jose into going and tell them at work you have a Dr's appointment. I'm sure he could hold you a couple days for observation One thing to consider, you can camp for six to eight dollars according to John S. Buy an out of state small game lisc. It would probably cost around $30-$40. That way you could walk around and get the lay of the land for next year. It's very hard to go into an unfamiller place and do good in just a weekend. I'll bet not a lot of deer will get taged that hunt, but you never know. I think some of them boys are real hunters. Anyway if you only have a small game tag, that almost gurantees that you'll see one of them Booners that Jim says is up there.
My backup plan takes 44 mag shells I don't think the deer prefer one weapon over another.
Randy, I assume your asking about the southern Indiana bowhunt and selfbow hunt? It's a good time, we hunt in jackson-washington state forest, a stones throw form where we camp. Several nice deer have been seen and a couple were taken by the jersey boys. John French hunted some private property near by that he has tied up and got a nice buck.
At our last couple of hunts ,we have had folks from New Jersey, pennselvania, and even a guy from Gremany. I think his name was roland??? We also have a bunny hunt at atterbury fish and wildlife management area. The bunny hunt is held in january or February just before season goes out
