The Texas hunt sounds interesting (Curt's place) but that part of Texas is a long drive away. I've been thru there and my guess would be about 16-18hrs away. Got no problem with that but it's something to be aware of. Something I've been wondering about is a Southern hunt of some sort.I have friends down in AL and Looziana and they brag about the hunting down there. It would be great to have a hunt where lots of small game and hogs too are on the agenda. I would even go for a hunt where we would camp and hunt. But cabins are nice too. Heck, even on a smaller scale a long weekend camp/squirrel hunt would be fun. Some things to ponder since we have time.

we could get together and hunt some squirrels out on my place if you wanted to. they all over the place when i'm deer hunting out there
John, Jim McGowan went on a hog hunt in Tennessee a year or two ago, that was definately not a canned hunt. They did spot and stalk, not sure if you can hunt" Southern Style" with dogs there, but Jim got himself a hog there, and said there were plenty more to shoot at. While not the adventure Texas is, might be a good hunt kind of on the cheap. I can talk with Jim and get the details, and I think he would be in for that one, if we wanted to hunt there. If you go to Trad Gang Pow Wow and do a search for "Georgia" you will find a long and interesting thread about hogs in the Cohutta WMA. Certain times of year you can take about anything including bear. It's in Northeast GA, seems about an 8 hr drive.It's BIG country. Terry Green , one of the Trad Gang moderators has helped folks plan hunts there.

I've sent Terry an email on the matter. Will pass on any info he has. Also if you go to Trad Gang and scroll down to the State Organizations and look for "Trad Bowhunters of Georgia" some info there about Cohutta. You can Google Cohutta WMA and get some info and a map too. This is God's Country boys. Makes Big South Fork look like a KOA. Once in there you are about 45 mins from town of any size, but cell phones get out according to the Trad gang info (for emergencies and stuff.) The place seems to be about 40 miles from Chattanooga if I read the map right. I75 almost all the way there. We have oodles of time so this might get interesting. Couple of permits required, about $100 total. One of the questions I had for Terry was nearby motels. Hoping there is an old Mom and Pop type within reason from there but not holding my breath on it.

OPOSSUM: Oct. 15-Feb. 28; No limit.
QUAIL: Nov. 13-Feb. 28; Daily limit: 12.
RABBIT: Nov. 13-Feb. 28; Daily limit: 12.
SQUIRREL: Aug. 15-Feb. 28; Daily limit: 12.
Coyotes, armadillos, groundhogs, beavers, starlings, pigeons and English sparrows: No closed season. No limit. Electronic calls may be used for hunting coyotes, except on WMAs.
RACCOON: Northern Zone: Oct. 15- Feb. 28; Daily limit 1. That area north of and including Carroll, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Jackson, Madison and Elbert Cos. Sounds very interesting...Hey Tim, Chris Powell has hunted with some guys in GA using dogs chasing squirrels and coons. Said there were tons of hogs in the area they were at.
We need to plan for '09 a trip out west for elk. Any state that gives you OTC tags. I got to try elk hunting before I can not climb the hills because of health/age or both.
Something else that is fun is hog hunting on some of the army bases. Last july I went to Ft. Rucker, Ala and hunted. If I rember I dont think it cost over 50.00 for the tags. I seen lots of hogs and had the place to myself for the most part. Because I was bowhunting I got to hunt the area behind base housing.
I've also heard that there are lots of hogs at the army base in columbus,ga. I think it's called Ft. Bennning???
