John , the Ky kit is about the worst one out there in my humble opinion. I started out with one and looking back, and knowing what I know now, I can say that with certainty. It's a two piece stock affair, joined by pins and a brass "filler". It's the same kit that CVA came out with years ago. Kit-wise, I'd go with one of the half stock kits. I know more than most the allure of a full stock Ky rifle, but that one ain't it. CVA no longer makes any traditional M/L guns, all inlines.Traditions is about it, unless you go to a semi custom kit as in Jim Chambers etc, but expect to pay about $600 min.. A very fair price but probably more than you want at this time. If I buy the parts to build a new rifle, it's gonna cost me $500-700 in parts alone.
If you want to hunt with it, I'd go with the half stock gun. Traditions has two or three variants of the so called "Hawken" rifle.
John Nail has a Lyman Great Plains and can attest to it's quality, but again, more $$$.

John, you saw the squirrel rifle that Tim made for me didn't you? We bought the stuff at Friendship, and Tim made the trigger and furniture. He can steer you in the right direction.

That would be a good one John. Check these out too

Lots of companies offering such type kits today.
A few tips
On the Tennessee style rifles get iron furniture, they never came in brass.
Go with .45 at the minimum so you can hunt with it. If you feel confident with a flintlock by all means go for it, if not, there's nothing wrong with a caplock.
I have all the tools you would ever need and the books and such so don't buy any of them.

They appear to be either the old Hatfield rifles or a knock off of them. Can't say with certainty. My biggest concern on any of the off the shelf rifles is the locks. You can get by with a somewhat marginal barrel but if the lock ain't right, you're screwed. A cheap barrel will kill a deer at 50yds, a cheap lock won't make the gun go off reliably enough to put faith in it.If I had to choose between that Cabelas gun and one of the kit guns with a Siler Lock, I'll go kit everytime.
