Colorado Elk Hunt for 2008?

Hey, Fellas. I'm interested in putting together an elk hunt, unguided on public lands, in Colorado in 2008. Anyone interested in going, get with me and let's start making plans. I think it would be the hunt of a lifetime!

I'd be very interested. I've always wanted to hunt elk, but have never had the chance.  I have some gear, but not sure what all I'd need for a trip like this.

Woody,

Let's give it a few more days to see how many more we may have, and then maybe we can all get together for a planning session right after the first of the year. I have one other fella that is interested so far. Chat with you soon!

Do you have a place in mind? I have hunted the Uncompragre NF on Co/UT border ,and there were lots of Elk there.

I might be interested. Jose' wants to go on an outfitted hunt to Utah, but I don't know if I want to spend that much $

Guys,

I don't have a place in mind, I'm wide open to suggestions. I have never been on a hunt like this, so I think it will be an adventure. I'm really just starting to do my research, so I think everyone who wants to go can definately add something to the table. I think it will be a great adventure! Lets get together just after New Years to start the planning! I would really like to have you along, John, especially since you already know something of the area.

Sounds like a plan.  Just let me know when and where to meet to discuss.  I have a couple of buddies who have be to CO several times that might be able to point us in the right direction.  Sounds like John would be an asset.  A do it yourself would be a lot more realistic for me and easier to sell to the wife!

Since you're not using horses, plan on taking enough stuff to base camp at the foot of the mountain(s) you can then hike up each morning and spend the day high. If you go too far back in, it will be an ordeal to pack the meat out.

I have made two trips to CO for elk, the first was self guided out of a pack camp and the 2nd was last fall, self guided out of a lodge. First trip was Whiteriver Natl. Forest just outside of Vail, the 2nd was San Juan Natl Forest in SW CO north of Durango. Both places had good populations of elk and fairly easy access but that means you are going to have several hunters also. I am considering going back to San Juan N.F. next fall if it works out with the friend I hunted with last fall.

I will be at the first soot in Jan. and would be more than willing to talk to anyone who might want to pick what little bit of brain I have left. I am by no means an expert (trips-2 elk-0) but any elk experiance is good experiance IMO.

John,

I have thought of using either horses or lamas(sp?) as pack animals to get to the good spots. In what little research I have done to this point, it sounds as if you can rent the animals, although I'm not sure of the costs involved. I do plan on being at the first shoot, so maybe we can get together with everyone then who can attend, and start taking notes and researching. I have a good friend who I think would want to go, but he is just starting with traditional equipment, and thus would probably want to hunt with a compound, unless someone has a problem with that. Let's all plan on meeting at the first shoot to discuss this further, and start making plans to go. I'm really excited just planning it, I know this will be a great hunt!

See you all at the first shoot!

This is Dennis.  Did somebody say rent pack animals?  I wonder how much that would cost?

My son and I will probably make the first shoot if the weather is decent.  What time do you guys want to meet?  Not sure what everyone looks like.  I'm the 40ish short bald/balding guy with a 9 year old in tow!

Woody, I'm the guy who has been setting up selling stuff. I think the shoots are usually over about 1:00, so maybe we can meet at the clubhouse about that time. When is the first shoot for sure?

The first shoot is Saturday Jan 6th.

Hey Dennis, I thought you said those were tracking dogs not packing dogs. I think you better get a couple more so we don't have to make so many trips.

is this invitation open to ky hillbillies? i went in 2005 with 2 other fellows who had never been. no luck. it was in the san juan mtns(s.co) pretty close to new mexico. we went 1st of sept and the bulls were not bugling, and only stayed 1 week. the area we hunted was thirty miles from blacktop, and 8 miles of that was dirt road. camped at 10,000 ft. alot of cattle in the area, and did see a few hunters.( DAMN ATV's !!!!) not remote enough for me! i would be willing to tag along, help out in camp, pack meat, supply an F-150 4x4 truck (seats 4 comfortably), and try hard not to say "ya'll ", "aw shucks", "what fer", "over yonder", and at least a thousand other annoying bits of southern slang.

don't want to crash no parties, but sure would like to go with someone who knows where to go, and see elk.

the trip was not a total loss, saw lots of mule deer, manage to bag a rabbit, climb some dandy mountains, and let me tell you, the scenery is out of this world!!

Thanks,

Hey, Fellas!

I think the meeting at the shoot went real well to get our hunt planning underway. I would like to have a serious set down and plan session with all who are interested in going within the next couple of weeks, so that we can get down to business about what we are going to do with the hunt. I am open to suggestions on a meeting time and place, so let's get going on this! I think it will be a great hunt!

Thanksm

Bryan,

Only days that I wouldn't be able to meet would be Jan 24th and 25th, other than that, should be good.  As far as a meeting place, anywhere between L'ville and Madison, IN would work for me, but just say where ever and I'll show.
