Rendering

Rendering down some lard in case I get to go down to the river and catch some Sauger.  All that rain yesterday is probably going to end those plans, guessing the river is way up.

Anyway, Kroger's has a bunch of oysters on sale.  Yum Yum.

Interesting.  Could you post some pictures when its done?  I've thought about trying that with deer fat.

This is from the fat of a mulefoot hog.  I don't believe deer fat would be any good to eat but you could always coat axe heads or something like that.

I was thinking of using the deer fat for waterproofing purposes. Bear grease makes a good natural bow finish. I thought deer might do the same.

Give it a try. Cook low and slow.

It will have to wait until next year.  I didn't save any fat from mine this year.

I've heard bear fat makes the best pie crusts and other pastries. I'd love to try some of that. Hard to find around here. hmm

Eastern KY would most likely be the closest place to find it. I hear there is real fresh Bear Fat walking around in the woods there.

When weather permitting, we render our lard in a large cast iron kettle. After we skim off the cracklings, we throw in a batch of potato wedges. Otherwise, we put the fat in a dutch oven or any pot that will fit inside our kitchen oven, and cook at 250 degrees until the cracklings float. Often we put a batch on before going to bed and take it off in the morning.

We had a bear season in Lewis county which is the county east of us. This was a limited season and it only went for a couple of weeks because they got the number of bears they wanted in that short span. If they keep moving west we should have a bear season soon. How soon? hmm
