Been to Colorado twice and never connected but have lasting memories. John is right, amazing how an animal can make it sound like the timber is crashing down around you and then slip away without snapping a twig.

Been three times, closest I ever got was 70 yards, the scenery and experience is worth the trip. Treat your self at least once, the sooner the better. Those mountains don't get any easier to climb when you get older.
a DIY elk hunt in CO can be done fro around $1000, If you already have camping gear. Rideshare, splitting gas costs, OTC tags, and public land unguided. True, the odds are against you versus a guided hunt, but they cant take the experience from you. The longer you can stay, the cheaper the hunt, as the gas and tags cost the same. Just do it, you wont be sorry.
I just looked at the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Guide, Nonresident cow/fishing combo $461. Nonresident either sex/fishing combo $616. All license require a $10 habitat stamp and a hunter education card. First time I went in 1997 elk tag was $250, mule deer tag was $150 and my half of the gas was about $100. Two of the greatest weeks I ever spent in the woods.
