Well I'll bet the rifle wont kick as bad as the bow. biggrin

Masters Tim and John are the ones to talk to but I'll give my thoughts.

40 cal is not legal to hunt with in Indy. I may be mistaken on that though. wink I work with a fellow that built a 28cal flintlock. I told him it would be good for squirrels and he said he was gonna hunt deer with it. He said in KY there aint no size restrictions.

You need to check on that firsthand. I may be mistaken on that.wink

I believe Tim uses a 58cal on deer and knocks them flat.

I'm also sure plenty of whitetails have been done in with 40 cals. Anyway you have an ace in the hole with Peemo the four legged trackin machine.

Technically you don't need a powder horn to hunt your back forty. You will need someway to measure out accurate charges.

If your gonna hang that fine lookin weapon on the wall you will definitely need a powder horn to hang with it and probably a coon skin hat. biggrin

Double set triggers that are set for target shootin aren't as practical when hunting.

Possible bags are mainly for toilet paper. You can carry what you want in yours though. Aint no good substitute in the woods for Charmin. biggrin

One of the experts may tell you different as I may be mistaken on all this. wink

You will need:
#11 caps
3F black powder
.395 round balls or conicals, depending upon the twist rate of the barrel
some cotton patching---I would start with .010 thickness, and if accuracy isn't there, use two of them to get .020
powder charge is something you'll need to experiment with, but I wouldn't exceed 75grains---35 to 50 would be plenty
You can use an empty 45acp case for a powder measure.

run a clean DRY patch down it to get any oil out.
shoot two or three caps to clear the nipple, then
pour the BP down the barrel then lay a lubed patch (spit, cooking oil, non petroleum) over the muzzle and start a ball (you can buy/make a ball starter)
then use the ramrod to seat the ball against the powder VERY IMPORTANT TO SEAT IT COMPLETELY down tight against the powder
pull the hammer to first click, and seat a cap firmly down on the nipple.
Pull the hammer all the way back
pull the rear trigger to "set" the front one, and she should then go off with a very light pull on the front blade
NOTE some triggers will fire without being set--they just pull a little harder, so check yours ---unloaded, of course.

Was this what you needed?

You can buy powder horns, but if you want to just hunt, a flask with the proper size measuring spout (bought separately) would work fine.

possibles is caps, ball, patches ,screwdrivers, starters, patch knife, flask, sammich and so on. whatever you want in the bag--if you use Dennis' Charmin, I'd go with unscented!

I can't see it up close, but the hole in the stock was probably for tallow to lube your patches

.40 is legal in the Commonwealth. Little light for my comfort range but I'm sure many .40s have harvested deer there. A well placed shot will trump a bad placed one with a bigger gun.

Whe have the real stuff. It's locked in the gun vault, you have to ask for it specifically.
