What a sucky time.

Boys, it's hard to get enthused about much of anything right now. Jackson and I went to the farm yesterday to get Chris some osage planks. We thought we'd walk around the place and check things out but the snow with it's hard ice crust on top made it very difficult to walk. We chopped a hole in the ice on the pond to see how thick it was. 10-12 ". I'm just hoping the fish make it since it's going to be frozen for some time.

I've got a selfbow for a friend about done and just not "in the mood" to finish it up right now. Same with a rifle I need finished by June. It's well along so it'll get done, just not now. Going to the gym later today. Need to get back in shape from this crappy Winter.

Anybody doing anything interesting ? This Winter sucks big time.

I feel the same Tim. Have not been able to get in the mood to do much of anything constructive this winter. I'm ready for Spring, big time. Although I like the beautiful Snow that's covering everything down here right now , since I don't have to get out and drive in it.

Thanks for going to the trouble to get those Osage planks Tim. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at checkering wood handles with the tools you told me about. Just setting at the hospital with my dad.

As John and Cowles know I had some trouble last shoot with fletching falling off. I've been on the trail of a fix. First of all, the Fletchtite Platinum ain't worth a squat on aluminum IMO. I had crowned the aluminum with silver enamel hoping to use Duco to good effect. Well I suppose the Duco held up but the silver paint came off on the fletch. I should have remembered the trouble Detroit had with silver and silver/blue paint back years ago.So off with the silver paint and I recrowned them with 123 Bullseye as per John's suggestion and glued on with Duco. So far after some shooting it seems to be OK. But what if I don't want to crown aluminum ? OK, some guy on TradGang mentioned using BullDog Adhesion Promoter , available at O'Reilley's Auto Stores. Picked up a can. Kinda pricey at $18 but seems would do a ton of shafts. Two light coats, the stuff dries very fast. Glued up some with Duco and it seems to work. The guy said any good glue would work with the BullDog. Another guy on TG mentioned using 3M Super Strength Adhesive part # 6004 for directly gluing on aluminum and said it works great on both aluminum and carbon,(and wood for that matter). Anyway by chance found some today at of all places Tractor Supply. Will fletch some bare aluminum tomorrow to see how it works. I kmow I can order some Saunders NPV from one of the archery suppliers but I really like to use locally available stuff if I can. The shipping usually runs more than the glue itself.

Chris, I found two checkering tools both single lines, just different bends on the tool itself. I also found an insert that has a cutting side and a blank side. This is for using after you make a first cut and then the blank runs in the first groove while cutting a new line. Somewhere I have a checkering veiner for borders. I'll find it. I have found the secret to a veiner is chasing it with a chasing hammer rather than pushing it. I have a homemade chasing hammer too you can have. Someone gave me a real one and I don't need both. I'll bring the wood and tools Saturday. I have a stippling tool I'll bring so you can see how to make one, very easy to do.

I'll say a prayer for your Dad, God Bless him.

Found it. You have to go back in the craft section at Walmart. It's not where the other glues are. I've got a shaft in the fletcher should have an evaluation once it dries. I'm told you can take it out of the fletcher in about 20 min but should wait several hours before shooting it. Since I use a "3 at once " fletcher 20 min is no big deal. May not be fast enough for some with other styles of fletchers.

Did you get the e6000 or the 3M super strength adhesive ? At walmart the e6000 is 3 bucks for 2 oz. Anyway I done one arrow in the E6000 and one with the 3m Super. The 3M product is harder to apply(the tube end is big) and costs twice what the E6000 costs. So I think it's the E6000 hands down all things considered. The guy on Trad Gang soaked an arrow in water for two weeks and the fletch stayed on. Maybe the down side, he sad you cannot use it for nocks. I'm trying one now to see. Basically the E6000 is the same cost more or less as Duco (Duco 1oz for 1.30).

My problem with tape- if the quill of the fletch is not dead on 90 degrees to the rest of the feather, over time it will lay over.. I've even had too many arrows in a quiver when it's hot and the pressure of other arrows will cause them to lay over. If you have the best quality feathers it is great. less than perfect and you have problems.I've heard complaints about the Bearpaw stuff being less than best when compared to Bohning.
