After reading some posts on leatherwall by Sam Harper, I had to try this...
Cheap Bamboo arrows.
Went to Home Depot, in their garden section and bought a bag of 7 (72'' long) bamboo plant stakes (5/16''ish) for $2.00. Heat straightened them, ground the nodes smooth and ground my tapers...threw on a nock, fletching, and a point. I can not believe how well it shoots out of my 55lb selfbow. I cut the shaft long to help break the spine a little, it spined around seventy pounds! and at 5/16ths!! Oh, and i also took a few minutes to use the heat gun and temper the bamboo, back and forth until you get that "sweet" smell. Took some additional time to flex, bend, look and listen for any cracks or crunches, Anyway, here is some pics!
The extra weight of the bamboo gave great penetration on the target, might be a good for deer hunting. I know I'm gonna fling a few at some squirrels...
