I like rw 4 " shield cut. I can usually get 2 fletchings out of each full length feather, and if ur arrow is spined right, 3 4 " feathers do a good enough job stabilizing> Trick is to bare shaft tune for excellent flight, than u don't need much feather. Banana fletchings are fun to shoot, cause they are so noisy, but not a good idea for hunting
We not talkin bout regular fletch. We's talkin Dwarfies.
If you use secondaries or especially tail feathers they are as quiet in flight as a falling star.
I also belive three fletch is the wrong way to go. In nature 3 of anything is not uhmm.. well , harmonious. The three leaves of poison ivy practically screams a warning.
Four fletch, tail feathers, split finger, wood shafts, and a proper all natural bow. At the shot a deer simply walks away to die.
I saw a Bird once wth left wing feathers on Both sides when flying he spinnned and could only fly a short distance because made him dizzy Fact Jack !!!

Silly, silly Den ,Den, you might ought to tell the 20 or so deer that I murdered with glass-backed bows,3 fletched 4" shield cut carbon arrows, and 2 blade magnus heads, that that combo just does not work. I can show you the headbones of a few of them, but for the most part they are somewhere in my septic system and lateral lines......, I hunted many years agoan entire season with my self bow , kinda went hungry that year. I still drag it out when the freezer gets filled, as an added challenge, but like to eat venison, so the freezer comes first. Several deer met their maker her at Grider's Gulch with woodies flying from one of them there "modern" longbows, but that was back when I was young, and foolish, now i'm just a crabby old fart that dont take no guff from another crabby old fart. I wont name any names, but his initials are... DEN DEN !
I,m sure Randells system works for him. I don't keep score or measure racks. Some would say that's the only measure of success.
I don't have a very good place to hunt. I could go out and try to find a better place, or try to lease a good place, or sign up for milatary hunts, or buy my own land I guess. I haven't done any of them though.
I really like hunting, and making my own equipment. Sometimes I forget that store bought is better. I guess.
Last year I saw one doe during bowseason. I found a place with real fresh sign and set down on a log. Well hidden. Acouple hours later I seen her. It took forever for her to make it near me and I was concerned about the air currents. Sure enough she got within 12 yds and caught a glimps of scent. She studied the situation some and then slowly walked back the way she came.
That's when I decided I need better equipment. Maybe climb up a tree, and get me some scentloek, and range finders, and grunters, and binos, and deer pee, and good camo, and game cams, and seed plots and everything I need to be successful.
But then I looked at my homemade bow and arrows and then decided NAAA... I'm kinda happy with what I gots
I figger I dont have very good chances of killin a big ol Davy Crocket deer this year. I'm not really lookin for one either. Give me a plump little forkey any day.
I got a little girl weenie dog that lives and breathes squirrel huntin. Only thing she cant catch one All she knows she has a chance and she will never give up.
Nothing wrong with ur way either Den Den, ive done it as well, but like I said, I like eatin venison. I reckon I just aint good enough to hunt with all primitive and get to eat it. Everyone has their limitations, and goals. I have not gun hunted in years, I think 16-17, not sure exactly. I could just pull out a centerfire rifle, or even a smokepole, and pop one, than hunt with a selfbow, cane arrow and flint head the rest of the year and claim to be all primitive..., but would I be ? My limitation is do it with a traditional bow, or not do it all all, but that's pretty much my limit. I do use a treestand, carbon arrows, steel broadheads, and do use camo, but am not hung up on it. My favorite cold weather shirt is an old swiss army wool shirt, OD green, any old pants will do, and my el cheapo fleece cap from Wal-Mart, not because its camo, but because its warm, comfy, and has a little short bill that don't get in the bowstrings way. I don't use bait, scents, scent loc clothes, gadgets, hell, I don't even like to use calls or rattle. I just sit in a tree, at a spot that I feel gives me a good chance of seeing a deer within 20 yards. If it don't work out, I figure I messed up and setup in the wrong place. I see lots of deer, and game, but watch game far more than I kill game. Saw a bobcat 2 mornings in a row at land Between the Lakes last fall, a coyote, and 2 fine, big bodied bucks within 4 and 15 yards ! The one at 4 was at a full run, chasing a doe, with 2 more does and a bigger buck following, which locked up on the wrong side of the tree, than after a few tense moments turned and walked away, never offering a shot. To me that was a great hunt, and a success, because none of those 5 animals ever knew I was there..., I won! By the end of the season last year I had not taken a deer. But honestly, I don't feel like last year was a failure, not at all, how could I ? Several years ago I had a bobcat walk under my stand, less than a week before he was legal to take. Most would be sick at the lost opportunity to kill a cat with bow, but I got video of him on my pocket camera. Was that not success ?
Im not going to begrudge another's methods, gun, compound, I don't even mind the crossbow, but have to admit, the baiting issue bothers me, and in my opinion, does not qualify as hunting. I've made my stance on that subject known on several forums, and have made some enemies because of it.
I do have my own place to hunt on, but always look forward to hunting public land with the intent to pack in as far as possible to get away from the crowds and hunt wild deer.
I guess I just needed to write all this so you would know how I hunt, and why I hunt.
Hey, wait a minute now, don't go dumpin on Lawrence, now i'm getting peeeeee'od !
I hate to see gun season come, but I hunt right on, because its the best time of year for a chance at a good buck, but I do it with my bows, and carbon arrows, because its what I like. One good thing about gun season in KY, the public land is quota hunt only with gun, so the wma's are abandoned during statewide gun season. Everybody is at home trying to pop ol mossyhorns with a .300 mag, so I got the place to my self. It may actually decrease my chances of killing anything because there is no one pushing deer around, but that's fine, its peacefull, quiet, and more like it would have been in the 1700's, which is to my liking. As far as the easier better, to me it is not. Yes, I use a treestand, but I figure more than one indian figured out how to get up in a tree over a salt lick or game trail, my treestand just makes it more comfortable and a lot safer. I like the old ways, and that's what I do.I have packed that tree stand Carbon arrows will not kill a deer one bit better than any other type arrow, its a convenience thing for me, easy to tune, easy to build, most durable, I weight mine up to the weight of any wood arrow, so they penetrate really well,, I just don't have the free time between, work, family,KTBA,Cutting firewood, raising and putting up a garden, to do wood arrows any more, used to do it, but really mourned the loss of a wood arrow for all the time I had invested in it, if I lose a carbon its like "Eh, whatever"
