INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Natural Resources Commission on Tuesday approved preliminary adoption of recommended rule changes for deer hunting.
Components of the proposed changes include modification of the season structure, bag limits, hunting equipment, and licensing requirements. The changes address requests from the NRC and the NRC's Advisory Council as part of their comprehensive review of fish and wildlife rules.
Key elements of the recommendation would allow use of a crossbow during the archery season and the urban zone season; establish separate crossbow and urban zone licenses; combine the early and late archery seasons into a single season from Oct. 1 through the first Sunday in January; and add a special antlerless only firearms season in select counties from Dec. 26 through the first Sunday in January.
The complete text of the proposed rule package and other information can be found at www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2362.htm.
Once the rule language is posted on the NRC website (www.in.gov/nrc/2377.htm), the public will be able to use the convenient online link to submit comments. Written comments also can be mailed to Division of Hearings, Indiana Government Center North, 100 North Senate Ave., Room N501, Indianapolis, IN, 46204-2200.
One or more public hearings will be scheduled to collect additional comment before the recommendations go back to the NRC for consideration of final adoption. NRC chairman Bryan Poynter said it is unlikely any changes would occur in the 2011 hunting seasons.
This begs a couple questions: Would we have to wear blaze orange all season? Is crossbow now considered "Archery" and the club needs a new class? Once again, we'll be sharing the woods with guns

Uall need to move outa that communist territory and cross the River to the other side where things make sence ! But You have to Swear Alligence to the United States of America And Uof K Basketball Equelly !! !!
Hummm. John I don't belive we would have to wear orange in the early season. Probably only after a certain date. Who knows though.
The crossbow advocates have fought for years to get in the early season. I don't think it will make a difference as far as deer populations go. It will make a difference to the hunting experience perhaps. I belive that some people who only gun hunt will buy xbows and get out there with the archery hunters. It may be a thing of the past to say that you almost have the woods to your self during early archery. This may make a difference to hunters like you, where the more the merrier, don't apply. I've heard others say many times that the reason for not seeing deer was because not enough people were walking around jumping deer out of their beds. To some the ends outweigh the means, but personally I think you should only jumpshoot woodies on the creek and run rabbits with dogs. One thing I don't like about gun season is the terrorized deer running for their lives with everyone slinging hot balls at them.
Anyway the hunting style we like where solitude is a huge part of the experience and where hunting on the ground takes a lot of the advantage away from us may suffer with these new rules. The crossbow advocates will say this scenario woud never happen but if a person is out there with a ****ed and loaded and scoped weapon hears you slipping up the hill, how many are gonna shoulder that thing and look thru the scope to see what you are. There's something for you to think about John when you decide to put a sneak on a squirrel if these rules pass. And pass they will. The DNR wants more money, the insurance groups want more dead deer and a lot of hunters want to kill a deer the easiest way possible. I mean lets face it the big draw to using these crossbows are because the are a lot easier to master. To me though sometimes the words eaiser and better don't really go together. Face it John we're Dinosaures
One last thing. I know a few that have used Xbows after an injury. More power to them. The only person I know that was basically healthy that bought one was a guy I worked with that was a compounder. He bought it for turkey hunting when the state passed thar rule. I asked him why the xbow. He told me that you can't kill a turkey with a bow you have to draw. Plus he said all the turkeys where he hunted were across the fence on posted land, and the owners couldn't hear a crossbow go off. Some will say that could never happen but I'm sorry that's what I heard. I'm sure that is a isolated case.
The only type of xbows that could shoot at the club would be the ones with recurve limbs. After all their almost exact copies of what the Genovese used centuries ago. I do think they should shoot at seperate targets. All on the edge of the lake
I guess I should have said a weapon that's scoped, loaded, with the sear engaged, and finger on the trigger. That certainly sounds like a bow to me
Jr buddy tell me it aint so. I've always liked you and thought you was a stand up guy. I did sometimes think that there was something slightly peculiar about you though. A certain air about you

well i guess ill have too hit the gym for the brawles that will most likely happen on my property...its bad enough during gun season that there is all kind of blood on the ground and i didnt cause it...there was 9 guys hunting a 40 acre lot next to my woods and it was the first time i didnt feel good about being in the woods
hahahahahahahahahh@ Dennis No you Probley not going to stop this we couldnt but there will be alota the crossbows sold and alot in pawn shops the year after when they discover there are no advantgages as far as range that bolt will not travel in air like an arrow so range is about the same and crossbow co. are the ones pushing this think they have greased the right pockets know what i mean But as far as another class no crossbows have way too much poundage 3d targets cant take it long Thats why coumpoud shoots dont allow them at their clubs Club has the right to set its rules !! !!

Steve those 9 guys were probably from Cinncinatti and had leased that 40ac from an outfitter
HEEHAW JR. Your right. Those things are like carrying a ten speed bike in the woods with you. Also someone whose name I won't mention almost dislocated their good shoulder and bout got knocked out of their stand when they shot at a deer, and one of the limbs hit the tree they was in
JR UofL plays ST Johns wed. night. Hope to see you there
........"but personally I think you should only jumpshoot woodies on the creek and run rabbits with dogs. One thing I don't like about gun season is the terrorized deer running for their lives with everyone slinging hot balls at them."

I do not seek the good of others as a sanction for my right to exist, nor do I recognize the good of others as a justification for their seizure of my property or their destruction of my life.- Hank Rearden

My brother and I do a radio show in Northwest Indiana and I would like some of you to call in and tell us what you think of the new rules. We will be on at 8:06 Eastern Time and the Number is 219-861-1632. We want to spend the next 2 months taking calls and then we are going to type up the results and send them down state with the Audio to back up people opinion. The radio station is WIMS and you can listen live on the web at www.wimsradio.com . If you call in and you are listening you have to turn your volume down or it we will get feedback!
We will be on for 2 hours.
Each caller will have a full 5 minutes to voice you stance and the reason for it. Please have your thoughts together so that you can cover everything you want. Please make sure that you do not cuss or you do not start attacking any person, the DNR or the NRC. I do reserve the right to HANG UP on anyone who gets out of control
We are on every Thursday night so keep calling and get your voices heard! We have been doing this show for over 3 years and we are well respected by the DNR in our region so they will take our and your input in this manner. I hope to hear from you soon.
Personally in my opinion crossbows should only be used ,as in the past, for the physically handicaped not the MENTALLY handicaped.ALSO we should go back to the rules from the eighties and early nineties. It seems alot of people keep pushing the edges of the rules instead of working on their woodsmanship and shooting skills.Plus a reduction in tag prices back to 10-13 dollars would result in larger harvest in antlerless deer[if thats what their seeking]most people cant afford the cost of a25$ for a buck tag plus25$ for the first antlerless tag.In the 80s and 90s that was 5 deer. The true deer hunters [woodsmen] have been pushed to the side by trophy hunters and big buissness . I guess they dont understand that Turkeys can see orange in december as well, if not better than in april.
Plus they need to repeal the cowboy rifle crap.People are already pushing and breaking the rules and soon will be pushing for full blown rifle season.Ya think its crowded and dangerous now wait till they start crackin off that rifle round through your cabin, house, dog, horse, cow or even yourself.INDIANA is not as open as some dumbded asses think.

One could say that a crossbow isnt trad. archery. The crossbow was invented as a weapon of war were as the longbow and recurves were invented and used to feed ones self, then used as weapons of war.Crossbow was made to penetrate chainmale and different armors of infantry and heavyhorse of the period.
It must not be considered as trad.archery, all the trad. shoots ive been to dont have it classed.only shoot with xbow class ive shot was whiteriver[ibo]

Also proposed is that militaryand refuge firearms seasons will begin oct.1 instead of nov.1. IF IT STANDS AS PROPOSED i guess my archery season will be cut shorter than usual, better to knock off their bucks and let ours grow a bit more i guess.
all intereted in these types of hunts need to watch for changes in the hunt dates if they occur.
We have went through all this in kentucky a few years ago. The only way to stop this crap is band together and attend, and protest at the DNR public meetings, let it be known its not acceptable. If the only ones that do show up are crossbow manufacturers and retailers, than guess what, they will get their way. UBK, (United bowhunters of Kentucky) Challenged KDFW on this and won. UBK is the only reason KY's archery season is still as pure as it is. UBK did concede and allow an extended x-bow season, but not the entire bowseason. To sum it up, "The squeekin' wheel gets the grease ! "
