Squirrel report

This is Dennis. Well John the season's two days old. What's the word?

Tomorrow me , Ronald, Billy, and Dave are gonna check out a new place. I'll bet Billy and Ron get limits!

We were over at some friends Sun. evening and I was paging through an old book called The Illustrated History of the Natural World. Originally printed in 1774. They didn't even know exactly what some critters looked like back then.

Anyways when I got to the section on squirrels I turned the page and saw a drawing of the Malabar Giant Squirrel ( sciurus maximus ). John you ought to see this mother! It didn's tell anything about them or where their from. In the drawing it looked like a black n tan with a bushy tail. He was holding a mango like our squirrels hold a beechnut. John, buddy we gots to get us some of that. If you know anything about these critters let me know. We'll set up a hunt. Later DEN

This is Dennis. We're back. Checked out a bueatiful woods right on Deams Lake. No squirrels. Man was it hot. Lots of big oaks and some pig nut, but no cuttins anywhere. Ron and Billy carried rifles and me and Dave carried our bows. We did just as good as them ha ha. Me and Ronald had a shooting contest at a pine cone in a tall tree where we parked and he out shot me with my own bow On top of that he stuck one of my arrows up in a tree.

Next week we'll check out the Backcountry. Anyone seeing any? DEN

Well, I got to go for 4 hours on Monday morning. Killed one red squirrel(only one seen) and missed a gray running across a tall walnut. Bow, of course, and lost the goofy arrow.

I've seen very little cutting yet. Shot mine out of a walnut on a West facing ridge, if that helps any. The Grays were on Poplar.

Kenny and I are going Sunday over around Batesville

This is Me again. From what I'm seeing I think the numbers are down. We'll know more after this weekend. Good luck to you and Kenny. DEN

Well, I went for three hours Saturday morning. Saw five squirrels, but they were way high in Hickory trees. I shot at one and missed (by an inch) No meat. Sunday at Batesville should be better.

missed

Boys, we aren't seeing many squirrels. It's as if the snow got them. Hope you are doing better.

There seems to be plenty of mast, but the Hickory nuts are falling already.

This is Dennis. The only ones I'm seeing are in my yard. Acorns are starting to drop at my camp and I'm seeing deer almost every time. I went for a long walk in the big woods upstream Sunday an didn't see one squirrel. Usually the camp is overrun this time of year, and I've not seen one. DEN

I was told that the total mast crop failure last year took it's toll on the little tree rats.  I've killed three in one outing, not much of a basis, all were old.  One was a pregnant female with three inside her.  Never done that before.  Made me feel awful, haven't been out since.  Probably the same as the turkeys.  When they have a hard winter, food or weather wise, they have to build their own body weights back up before they attempt to have young.  I'm still seeing grouse sized trukey poults while on patrol.
