Newby from Terre Haute

Just wanted to say hello. I am new to the forum and new to bowhunting. I just made my first longbow and I am interested in meeting people that share a common passion. I'm sure that I will gain a lot of insight from you seasoned veterans.
Thanks for having me.
Marty

Welcome Marty...

We have several talented bowyers amongst us... sure not me... I'd love to learn, but have too many other passions right now...

Hope to meet you someday at a shoot or whatnot!

Jonathan

Hello Marty. What kind of longbow did you make? We have some very good glass bow makers in the club. Steve "Redtail", Dale " flingshot", Harry Elburg, Rob Larkin, and others. We also have some good self bow guys. Flintim, Paul Pyle, Gary, Bob, and Jim.

I know a great self bow maker from Terre Haute. Flatstick Jackson. He makes amazing bows and kills big deer too. I think crooked stick Mike might be from over that way, and Curtis too.

Sometimes I work on bows and arrows and other stuff also. It's a lot of fun.

Hope to see you at the range. Dennissmile.gif

Wow...awesome guys!! Thanks. When I say that I am a newby to this I really mean a newby. I can't tell you what kind of long bow I made. lol. I took a piece of wood and cut/sanded it down to what I thought a longbow would look like, added a riser (I think that is what it is called) and filed some nocks. Then I corded some hemp to serve as the string. I have finished tillering it today and will be staining and lacquering it starting tomorrow. I plan on then taking it to gander mountain and having it tuned up.
I will have to submit a pic here tomorrow. I am just completely fascinated on how much fun I have had working on it. My first one and I am hooked. I am already planning my second and third ones...lol
I would love to come to some events and meet some people. How do I find out the times, places, etc. about the events?  I would also love to pick up on any hints/tips anyone has.
Thanks for the warm reception.
Marty

Welcome,

You really jumped in - nice. I doubt Gander Mountain will be much help, I might be wrong - but I do know you can get some good information if you come to our shoots.

You really should try to make it down for our May two day shoot (from the website):
"In May, we will hold our annual Indiana Traditional Bowhunters State Championship, a two day shoot. We set thirty targets, two shots at each, and encourage everyone to shoot it as many times as possible. Many chose to shoot it with their recurve, longbow and self bow. We also have a few novelty type shoots such as a long range target, a coon (night) shoot, a smoker round, aerial targets and whatever else we may come up with. Awards are given to the top shooters in each class and there is a table full of door prizes given out. We usually have half-dozen vendors set up to take care of all your re-stocking needs. Camping is allowed on the conservation club grounds."

See here itba.org for more.

Well I guess technically what I made is a Self bow, it is made with just one piece of wood. I am debating now on hurrying to make some arrows or buy them from the store. I will make my own at some point, but I really want to get out shooting now.

Also, regarding the shooting meet, is there a cover charge or only pay if I want to shoot? Can I make it a day trip on Saturday? Food onsite or offsite? Tried to get the fiancee to come but she is not feeling like she would belong (city girl that would have to be starving to eat Bambi, and would still have to think about it....lol)

Come on over for the shoot. No charge if you don't shoot, but we do have a practice range. Food, yes, drinks , yes. You have a much better chance of finding arrows for your bow here than any big box store. And not knowing what spine you need, lots of guys will loan you an arrow or two to shoot from your bow to see what you really need before you lay down some cash.
Come down on Saturday, if you only have one day. Sunday starts to get thin as the day runs on. What weight is your bow ? I have a decent assortment of arrow weights.

Hey Welcome Marty,

Always like to see new people get interested in archery. Espesialy those that like to make their own equipment. Hope to see you at the two day. It is a great time and wonderful chance to pick up tips from a bunch of great guys.
