Being an astute observer of wildlife I've been lately watching the squirrell population in my backyard. I've noticed something odd compared to most years. I have a pear tree that some years bears an incredible amount of fruit. These pears usually get ripe in very late summer. I'd say sometime around Labor day. When they start getting ripe it's always a race between me and the tree rats to see who get's the most. That's ok by me, I always get my share. I've noticed the last couple weeks the sq's are eating the half grown pears. I've never seen them after my pears this early. I wonder what that might mean?
I agree with Randy. Just make sure you only take ground shots. You don't want the neighbors to complain about them arrows "raining" on their houses. It reminds mind of my younger days shooting birds in the backyard with my slingshot. One stone on the roof was OK, but after several shots the ladies started complaining. Those were the days...
Getting back on subject. I noticed over at the creek this evening there were a lot of little white oak acorns on the road. You know they always drop a few this time of year. Around the field is a pig nut that has some little ones under it. Looks like nuts this year. I'll go down the hill and check the beech and walnuts in the next couple days.
corn husks are thicker this year, so are the tomato skins. Today I noticed that some beechnuts had fallen and like my buddy bambi have noticed a few acorns on the ground.
I think it maybe a cold wet winter much like it has been this summer
The ratts have finished off all my pears and now their eating all the half grown green tomatoes. I don't know about later this year but right now I think their pretty hungry. I grow tomaters every year and I've always have Sq's running around the yard. The only year they ever bothered my vines was the year they dissapeared. I think it was the year we went pig hunting in Tenn. John will remember the year of no squirrels.
The tree rats are cutting the pin oak in my yard an the dog wood across the street. Some of the hard maples are turning red .I think we are in for an early fall. Just my 2 cents worth.
nothing to worry about Dennis. Those are "city squirrels" their Yuppie upbringing has them on fruit and vegetable diets instead of the natural nut provinder.
Took the dogs and went for an early morning walk at the big park, upstream from my camp. Usually I see dozens of sq's on these walks. I found one shagbark that had a few nuts that they sampeled, and that's all the cuttings that I saw. The only sq's that I saw was back by the area that they have a bird feeding station set up. There were two grays back there. Ronald thinks their migrating. He went down a stretch of road over near Jasper and saw about 40 in a short time. I think he might be right
By the way John these park sq's might sound civilized but I can gurantee that their wild eyed, countryfied, backwoods, take your finger off, tree rats. DEN
