Well this was my last day with a muzzleloader. The weather forecast for tomorrow had me sitting it out. The wind this morning was out of the East, so I walked in to the far West side of the farm and set out to slowly still hunt toward the East.. I was standing in the woods watching the little albino squirrel we have there play around in the trees, when I spied some movement beyond the woods. 5 does were marching single file up in the bean field. Nice to see since all I have seen all season have been 4 deer total !. The woods being plenty wet, I was able to jog thru the woods toward the other side of the bean field. I got to the the edge about the same time they did. The woods is downhill from the bean field so I was much lower than the deer. They sensed something but did not spook, but did have me frozen in my tracks. I stood still until the threat passed and they continued slowly across the edge of the field. The closest, a nice fat doe, stopped for some reason and I broke the trigger on the flintlock. They all bolted and ran away, but the big doe appeared hit. As they went over the crest in the hill they left my sight but angled toward the left and came back in view. But only 4. The 4th stopped and looked back in the field, and then ran off. I crested the hill and saw the doe lying in the field. She had gone about 100 yds. Still left her about 200 yds from the road. I field dressed her and started the drag. I'm getting too old for this. My grandson needs to get bigger and start dragging my deer I think. LOL. Funny thing was I started building an aluminum deer cart yesterday at work. Maybe next year I can use it .LOL. There will be venison in the pot again this year . Another blessed year. Now I can go back to squirrel hunting !!!
