Flinttim: I was watching the bowyer's journal movie with the Scott interview from Owl bows. It shows him putting sinew on a bow back with watered down Tightbond 2. I thought everyone used hide glue?
John, I once made a hickory bow with a rawhide back, and glued it down with TB II, worked fine. The bow failed, but it was my tillering, not the glue. Also, I have a Ben Pearson I glue down snakeskin on with TB II, and it seems to be holding fine. I think it will work, and maybe easier than hide glue? Bryan

I noticed that too and asked Gary Miller about it (He took classes from Ed) He said it works great and you don't have to worry about it succumbing to moisture. I plan on trying it on my next sinew bow.

Hmmmmn......maybe a Sinew backed Saxon? (just kidding) Seriously, everyone puts snakeskin on bows for looks. Why not sinew on a glass bow to add pounds? I'll volunteer the 15lb recurve, if you want to try it.
There really is no such thing as "waterproof" at least where we are concerned. The glue dries from the outside / in, even when used for normal woodworking projects. The moisture in the glue itself has to be able to migrate outward or the joint would never dry. Hide glue when used is mostly a water based product, at least it is mostly water. It takes a long time to dry because the moisture soaks into the wood and then the hide glue dries on the outside and sort of traps the moisture in. I won't even bend a sinew bow for at least 2 months. Using Titebond, which is not water based , cuts down on the dry time.

Tight bond makes a liquid hide glue that is very good and saves a lot of time when you don't have enough time. I enjoy using the old way of melting it down etc. but Tight Bond liquid hide glue does great for putting on skins and sinew. As far as waterproofing, I finish it up with tru oil or wax etc. Just another option when time is limited or need just a little to wrap self nocks.
He was using tb2, not 3, and watered it down from the get-go. I wondered how that was gonna work, but he sure knows his stuff, and I wouldn't doubt it does. He even wet the bow back first.
