This is one screwed up deer season !!

What the heck is going on ? I hunted from dawn to dark on Turkey Day, Saturday and Sunday. Not a deer was spotted, close by or off in the distance. Usually when I tire of the tree stand I get down and walk some. At least then you jump one or two out of bed. Nothing ! I have not heard more than 6 shots this season out of the former Brushcreek State Hunting area (now Purdue property) but there seems to be plenty of guys hunting there.
I have heard on the radio that the rut is off this year, timewise and then there is EHD. What's everyone else finding where they hunt ?

I do think I'll concentrate more on evening hunts myself. The mornings sure have not been worthwhile. John Nail knows about the old BrushCreek property, and he'll tell you that it was full of hunters in years past with tons of shooting going on. Now I am hearing very little shooting anywhere around the farm. It's like they are not there. (the deer)

Just kiddinwink I haven't gotten a deer yet either. Went up to the Backcountry and that area where we hunted is being clearcut. Haven't been back. My longtime hunting buddy moved away, and the other one fell off a ladder. I'm teaching that new grandson and we been out a few times, but no shots. I'm not gun hunting at all. I went over to my camp on opening day of gun and watched deer all morning long. There were a couple dead in the creek this summer, probably from EHD, but theres still a bunch around. I went up once to my place in Jefferson county and according to the sign it looked like EHD might have went through there. Late season is comming up and that boy don't have any warm huntin clothes so I don,t know how much we'll get out. Plus the Sauger are in the riversmile DEN

Tim, I think the deer are spotty this year. I know several folks who reported the same as you, and my old haunts were/are thin also. I've been hunting a property down by Friendship with Kenny, and we've seen a lot of deer, but they are old does and bucks, and pretty hard for a ground hunter to get up on. I'd say I've seen maybe 50 different deer. Shot at...none. Had a chance at a doe earlier but she had a little fawn with her and I let her walk. Had a very good buck about 10 yards away, but staring me down the whole time--no shot. Yesterday, I crept to within 25 yards of bedded does and when I blew the grunt call (very softly) to get one to stand up, they blew out of there like a Quail covey!

I intended to hunt Brushcreek this morning, but the pouring rain changed my mind. The good news is, I'm killing a lot of squirrels.

A little weird in my end of Switzerland County. Saw some really nice deer in later summer on our new place, found three EHD victims and have been lucky enough to kill a buck and a doe with my recurve. Overall, saw very few deer during archery season and since gun season started, the kids and I are seeing very few deer and it doesn't seem like they've disappeared from pressure or turned nocturnal. Our driveway is about a 1/4 mile long lane and we are seeing very few deer along it at night and normally, eyes are glowing everywhere. I did slip up on a bedded doe opening weekend and shot her with a .44mag rifle, but we just ain't seeing what we should be.

Deer numbers/sightings are down in northern Brown County as well. I guess we'll see how much the EHD has affected the population once the numbers are compiled. I bet Brown county numbers are down 15 to 20%.
