i have people asking about my knives but really have no idea what to charge them for one ? i offered this one to a guy for $50 . do you think thats to much ? i also told him if he didn't like it he could return and i'd refund . i think thats only fair.waiting to here back from him now. if it's not worth $50 i'll use it for a throwing knife to hunt wild boar..... lol
Your going to have a hard time getting people to answer your question. The only two people who can set the value is you and the person thinking of buying it. You need to look at your cost and time to decide what you would ask for it. Then as I found out with bows you don't want to de-value your stuff and sell it to cheap. Some people will think you are to cheap while others will think you are out of you mind. But.. you also may want to sell some so you need to determine what price would sell it and can you live with that. mostly you can look at the market by going by going to places where they sell them to see what they are bringing (friendship, as an example). (I would also say that most people want a shealth).
I have struggled with this a lot when pricing a bow, to the point where I really have not wanted to make them for sale. Reallt only you can set the price.
I am sure I have not helped but... just something to think about.
I think you shoulden't sell knives. I've seen many times when someone turns a hobby into a job, then that's the begining of the end. How many $50 dollar knives do you want to make?
I had an uncle once that was a blacksmith for the railroad. Every year he would make one knife. I would get to see them at our anuall 4th of july picnic. I was just a boy then and I couldn't touch them, but I remember they were georgeous. He would always sell his one knife, and use the money to buy his huntin liscense and four boxes of shotgun shells for squirrel and rabbit season. Back then that would have been about twenty bucks. A pretty good sum of money. His knives were equal to any custom knife made today.
From looking at the knife you made me I can tell you have the same tallent. If you start making knives to sell then you will be trying to make them fast and cheaper. Let your skill develop. No telling how nice of knife you'll be able to make for yourself, or a few close friends someday.
Said very well! I have taken one order on a bow for sale. It was the worst experience. I felt pressure and the fun stopped. If I make a bow and the give it away, trade it or sell it to buy something else the fun has stayed in it. The idea of them staying special is more improtant, at times, than the money.
There is nothing wrong will building to sell. You just need to make up your mind on what you want to accomplish.
your right dennis! could i have my knife back now??? lol i'm not really tring to make money at it, but would like to buy better tools to make them with . and some supplys . i really enjoy making them . and some extra cash would be nice also. i don't want to take orders or anything like that , just sell them when i get them made.
