Wow this is a quite group. How's the hunting going? Any stories? How all the bow builders doing, any new projects?
I have only been out a few times with the Bow. I have seen many deer, had a few good shots, haven't taken one yet. Black powder last weekend, same as the bow hunting. Still lots of time. Plan to hunt this weekend.
Started another new bow this week. Bloodwood handle, Bocote limbs.
This is Dennis. Yes, we're quite a group. No deers yet. Ronald is in Mexico on a second honeymoon, his wife went too. I am making a new bow it's osage. I've started another, it's osage. I've got a lot of others in the planing stage, their osage too. I fell out of my stand the other day and I wasn't wearing a harness. My stand is one of them little three leg stools so I didn't get hurt. I can't wait till we shoot at Chicks. Are you all going pig hunting with us? Later DEN Ps. how do you use all them smiley faces? DEN
I do plan on going pig hunting. Just waiting for more details and the dates. Do we know if Chicks has been set up yet and are there any changes since last year, because of the change in management at the store?
This is Dennis. I heard through the Indiana backwoods grapevine that were gonna start shooting the first thur. in December. Check with Dan or Doyle for the official version. What details do you need about pig hunting? I think basically the plan is we gonna hunt them down and kill em. Later DEN
Passed on a little doe last Saturday. She was about 8 yards, i believe. That's the only deer I've seen within range. My friend Kenny has gone ape over the longbow squirrels, and that's about all we've been doing so far. In fact, we played hookey from work today to go. Saw probably 15 squirrels, shot at three and go none! Fun, though. I've killed 19 this year with the longbow, mostly grays. .............oh, yeah, I sold a story -"the Trophy"-to "Indiana Conservationist" Magazine (so I can pay for my new Pronghorn bow, hehehe)
I watched four bucks in an alfalfa field Sunday evening late. They were challenging each other and two of them got down to some serious fighting. They didn't let the does in the field get very far away from them though. I watched one buck work two scrapes and raise up to snip off some limbs above the scrapes. I waited for it to get dark enough I wouldn't spook them when I left and when one of the does got close a buck came running after her and I could hear his hooves strike the ground as he came past me, too dark to see but he sounded pretty heavy.
On Monday morning I went to my stand and watched a small buck work a scrape on the hill above me. About 8 am a nice six pointer walked straight down the hill towards me about 45 degrees to my right. When he got within about 12 yards he made a hard left turn and quickly walked off to my right. I never got the chance to take a shot.
I'm off next monday and tuesday, then wensday, thursday and friday before gun season opens. I hope to get some good days in during the rut.
I talked to Todd Hunt the other day, he fell from his stand on opening morning and broke his ankel in 3 places. He was to have surgery on it last week and will probably be out for the season. Said his strap broke and let his stand collapse, tough break.
Hunt hard but hunt safe. Steve H.
