think it will matter what ring i go with??? they all look big in the heart wood . it was cut about 2 weeks ago so it will be awhile befor i can start. maybe have to make one out of cherry while i wait
This is Dennis. Save the cherry for pies. Cherry is a tension weak wood. It would need to be backed with something. An all cherry bow would be a very striking bow. It's just a question of where you'll be struck when it blows. Tim will probably be along to contradict me. DEN
I won't contradict you Dennis, I'm in agreement. Yes you can go with a thin piece of hickory but it would have to be very thin. Anything much more will crush the cherry. I don't even use it for gunstocks anymore. Too damned brash !Pretty wood yes but don't carve worth a damn. Get the white sapwood off John and go with the first yeller ring you come too. Split it into staves and leave the bark on all the ones you don't intend to use right away. Save that one, and debark it and go. Reduce it some and seal the back and ends real good with shellac. Clamp it down onto something, inducing reflex and let it dry. Should be a dandy. Now if you have the time deabrk all the rest and seal the backs. Mulberry tends to dry check in sapwood real bad and will carry the check into the heartwood. If you don't have the time then leave the bark on for now. Mulberry sapwood is so thick it is harder than osage to debark when dry so if you have the time debark now.
