Yew Recurve

The bow is 58" from nock to nock.  It's 43 lbs at 25".  The tip overlays are sheep horn from LoefflerChuck.  The skins are broad banded water snakes.  I used tru oil for the finish.  The stave was pretty much flat with a hint of deflex.  I left it alone and just flipped the tips.  I made string grooves on the belly side of the recurved tips.  That is the first time I have done that.  I enjoyed working with yew.  It's much softer than the osage I'm used to.  If I looked at this bow the wrong way it would get a dent in it.

I don't think so.  I have been having problems with my vision lately but I don't think its from the yew.  I know it causes a rash on some people.

That's fantastic. Really like the skins, it looks like lightening from a distance. Do we have Broadbanded around here?

I got a couple yew boards and have made one bow with them so far. It was a hickory backed lam bow.

I thinned the hick pretty well and glued in a little reflex. After shaping and floor tiller I found the bow was gonna be pretty light.

Around 40 or so pounds. I had to go slow with wood removal and finally got it tillered pretty good. Shot it quite a few times and all looked good.

About 44lbs and good tiller and not much follow. It shot fast for the poundage.

I finish sanded with my little palm sander with 220 and then 320 grit. Put the finnish on and took it down to our indoor shoot that week.

After shooting it some I was looking it over and noticed a hinge area. The belly had crysels in that area.

I think I might have done that with the palm sander.

It sure aint Sage. Lesson learned.

Oh yea, I cut a Yew board on my bandsaw. Tried to split it and get two thin lams. Wound up with one good one that may be a good

tri lam or something. I wore long sleeves, gloves, goggles, and a dust mask. Didn't have any problems.

A couple weeks later I was using the band saw without all the protective gear and when I was done I realized I had real blurry vision.

I grew up in the 60's and I'm tellin you this was bad.no

I washed out my eyes and set down with them closed for a while to see if I was going totally blind.

After a little while things cleared up. Later I got all suited up and cleaned up that saw real good.

Another lesson learned.hmm

Your hickory backing probably over powered the yew belly. I've been having problems with my eyes and constant headaches for about 4 weeks now. I haven't made any yew dust for the last 2 weeks and it's only gotten worse. I have a pair of glasses ordered. I'm hoping that fixes my issues.

Hope the glasses help. As we get older our vision changes over time. If something goes wrong suddenly it may need looking into.

Umm.. no pun intended.

We don't have broad banded water snakes around here. Those came from Texas.

I think ours are called the Northern Watersnake. If ther's a meaner snake alive, I've never met one.bleh

You got that right. They have a lot of attitude for such a small nonpoisonous snake.

Clint-That my friend is awesome! The Asbell wool looks familiar!!! Hope your vision issues are a simple fix with the new specs. If you ever get in the mind of letting that bow go, give me a holler. Still want to pick one up for Drew at some point.

Thanks! I got my new glasses last night. They seem to have fixed the problem. I felt better today than I have in a month. I'll keep a bow for Drew in mind. I have some roughed out that I want to finish this winter or spring. I'll probably hold on to this yew bow.
